"The Smoker," by David Schickler

Here's another contribution from Jack. I had to chuckle at his description and I am posting it here along with a link.

Attached is a curious story from The New Yorker. It is currently
beingmade into a film and apparently made the author instantly rich.

And here is a question worth thinking (and commenting) about: It has been said that the short story lends itself better to film than the novel. What do you think?

I'd like to know what people make of this story. I didn't think much of it the first time I read it, but it has gotten a lot of attention. I've reread it three times.

I don't find the girl or her parents believable in any way. I kept expecting the story to be revealed as the teacher's fantasy, but if it was, I missed it.
