Labors of the Heart by Clair Davies
This is one of my favorite stories of all time. Click here. It's remarkable for many reasons, but the details are pitch perfect and the hero's weight (400 pounds) is rendered without sentimentality nor is it played for laughs. This story is a glimpse into a life.

I don't think I've ever read a better short story. The characters were so well drawn, there wasn't one false note. By the end, I was moved.
